From Kit to Custom: Semi-Custom Design and the CAD Behind It

Event: 2026 Purdue Ft Wayne Forums
Description
The KitBot is a proven starting point, but turning it into a robot built for this year’s game takes CAD. This two-part session covers both sides: deciding what to change, and setting your team up to design those changes together.
Part 1: Building on the KitBot (Drew Clem, FRC 9119 Iron Legends)
Drew will walk through how the Iron Legends use the KitBot as the foundation for semi-custom designs. They keep what already works, figure out where custom parts will actually help, and adapt the design to the game without taking on the risk of building everything from scratch. This part is especially useful for newer teams, or for any team that wants to compete without overextending.

Part 2: Onshape Classrooms and Collaboration (Andrew Lund)
Semi-custom design depends on your team being able to model, modify, and share parts. Andrew will show how to set up Onshape Classrooms, share documents with the right permissions, and organize your files so several students can work on the robot together without overwriting each other’s work. Teams leave with a CAD setup that can support the design approach from Part 1.
