Crimp It Right: Hands-On FRC Connector Workshop

Session Details Approved

Event: 2026 Purdue Ft Wayne Forums

Description
A bad crimp can look perfectly fine in the pit and still fail in the middle of a match. A CAN connector that drops out under vibration, a battery lug that heats up under load, a PowerPole that slides out of its housing: these are some of the most common electrical failures in FRC, and nearly all of them can be prevented.

This is a hands-on session where you’ll work through the connectors you’ll see on almost every robot:

  • Molex SL locking connectors for CAN bus wiring
  • Anderson PowerPole connectors for power distribution
  • Battery lugs on heavy-gauge battery leads
  • Ferrules for screw and lever-terminal connections
  • Ring terminals for bolted connections
For each one, we’ll cover which tool to use, how to strip and seat the wire, and how to check your own crimp so you know it’s good before it goes on the robot. You’ll also learn to recognize the warning signs of a bad crimp when you’re inspecting a robot during a competition.
